Seen at … Virgin Festival, Toronto

August 31, 2009

I recently covered the Virgin Festival for the National Post, and while I wasn’t allowed to take pictures of the stage (I did anyways) I was allowed to take pictures of anything else. Considering the Sunday headliner and opening act were the two of the most diametrically opposed bands in the history of music – the Pet Shop Boys [pictured above] opened for Nine Inch Nails – I spent some time trying to spot their respective fans.

Article A. Without a doubt, 100 per cent Pet Shop Boy lovers. Who else would match their red and white striped shirts with their toques (oh ya, and dress up like WALDO!!) for no other reason than “because we wanted to.”

Turns out that’s a blatant lie and they were actually doing promotion for Where’s Waldo. Either way, Wilma is definitely proportionately hotter than Waldo, and I don’t ever remember her wearing short shorts (only a below the knees, no nonsense skirt).

Now these two are what you would call true Nine Inch Nails fans, or what are affectionately referred to as “pigs and whores” according to several NIN fan pages.

You know this guy woke up this morning with his alarm set to play Pretty Hate Machine in its entirety, then looked at his wife and said “Debbie, get the fucking leather polish out, we’re going to see Rez (his nickname for Trent Reznor).

After mounting their hog they tore into a Starbucks, ordered the biggest, craziest mocha latte on the menu, then headed down to the concert looking for puny Pet Shop Fanboys to pummell. The best thing of all? Check out his boots. And what do you suppose is in that bag, lunch? No, it’s a brand new macbook pro and he is totally going to fire up garageband and rock the hell out of the “posers” in line for Pizza Pizza slices.

I’m going out on a limb and predicting “The Waldo” will be the hot new look for hipsters this fall.

Where’s Waldo couple I guess was doing double-duty at T-dot events; I saw them Saturday at the Fan Expo. They may have stood out at V-fest, but their outfits were pretty safe and boring where I was.

His boot laces really bother me. What if they get caught on something? What if they get caught in a moving bike part?

Just tuck them in or tie the excess around the boot a couple times.

Common sense for anyone who’s ever ridden so much as a bicycle.

Or, even better suggestion. Don’t wear 1980’s stripper/goth boots when you’re over 40. And a man.
