Japan thought our X-Men cartoon was boring

November 12, 2009

I love you too, Japanese X-Men

This Japanese intro for the 90s X-Men cartoon bothers me for a couple of reasons:

  1. It’s too awesome.
  2. I’m sensitive, what?

No really — I know we all have extremely fond memories of the old X-Men cartoon and its theme song, but wow this version of the intro is several kinds of perfect. The mutants here are way more badass — even Cyclops and the Beast, who suck — and the J-rawk music kind of melts my face off. At 1:04 after a soaring howl set OVER A SHOT OF THE MOON, the singer switches to English for an understated adlib: “break out.” He’s so cool when he says it, you just know he’s gonna sleep with your girlfriend. And then Rogue winks at me, which is pretty much all I wanted out of life back then.

The ending? The ending goes something like this: “CRYY FOR THE MOOON!” Which makes no sense at all but recalls the eariler moon shot, and so is like poetry to a stupid kid’s brain. (i.e Mine. Right now.)

Magic after the jump:

And for comparison’s sake, the one you grew up with:

UPDATE: Once more. But with FEELINGS!

Wouldn’t it be disappointing to see the crappy American animation of the show after a normal anime style intro?

Regardless, none of these pretenders hold a candle to Samurai Pizza Cats.

True story: One time I met this girl, and she had the X-Men theme song as her ringtone. 7 years later and she’s still around.
